Braver Angels

Taking a stand against toxic politics

Braver Angels (braverangels.org) is a national citizens’ organization co-founded by Dr. Bill Doughtery at University of Minnesota. It addresses the problem of toxic polarization by developing effective methods at the grassroots level that overcome stereotypes, building mutual understanding, and strengthening democratic life.

Braver Angels at St. Matthew’s has taken national leadership by adding a focus on Christian reconciliation and love of neighbors, nonviolent philosophy, and skills like story-telling and relational meetings. We have also added a rural-urban conversation by partnering with an ELCA church in rural Minnesota, ACT (Area Churches Together) Parish in Murdock Minnesota. We meet approximately once a month for workshops or discussions and all in the community are invited. There is a strong emphasis on intergenerational connections and involving young adults.
