Listening
Most of us live in a world full of noise and can find silence unusual or difficult. Further, most of us have so much to say and so little opportunity to share it with someone else who will listen well that we grab every opportunity to speak, forgetting that the other person may need us to listen to them. Below is a simple spiritual practice to help you learn to be a better listener to God and others:
- Be still and aware of all the sounds around you. Identify and name the sounds you can hear, beginning with those furthest away and ending with the sounds of your own body—your breathing, heartbeat, etc.
- Listen to those sounds again, giving thanks to God for each of them Spend some time reflecting on what God may be saying to you through the sounds you can hear.
