Babette’s Feast: Reflecting on Life in the Spirit

On Pentecost, the Church celebrates when the Holy Spirit poured her gifts and cultivated her grace in the first believers. The same Holy Spirit who gives gifts and cultivates grace joins us in Baptism as we live out our spiritual life. This can sound heady and theological—but in life, you might have experienced the Spirit’s grace without realizing it. When have you been surprised by grace? On May 19th, join Rev. Matt Roberts in a discussion on life in the Spirit centered around the 1987 award-winning film, Babette’s Feast, where an ostentatious French refugee and an austerely pious community are surprised by the grace they find in each other.

We will meet at 5:00 pm, and take a break right when we get to the “Feast” part to eat our own feast! We are looking for volunteers whose spiritual gift is cooking. Please email Matt at matt.ja.roberts@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer to prepare a dish to contribute. The movie is deep enough to have a whole college class on, but should you want, email Matt for additional readings should you appreciate the opportunity to “dig deeper.” We welcome you to bring the fruits of your life, whether food, fellowship, or fascination, as we wonder together how the Spirit surprises us with grace. As a bonus, if you attend the Faithful Innovations meeting on the same day, you will have even more opportunity to reflect on how the Spirit moves in your own life!
