What is Baptism?

Baptism is a sacrament, an “outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.” Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. Through it God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit, grants us new life in Christ, and welcomes us into a community of Jesus’ followers (the Household of God). The Baptismal Covenant give us a roadmap for following the way of Jesus. The Covenant may be found on p. 304 of the Book of Common Prayer, or on the Episcopal Church’s website here.

Baptism is a public liturgy.

Since Christianity is a public faith, we don’t do private baptisms. God calls us to live out our faith in community, and especially with people we might not meet otherwise, who have something to teach us about God’s love and life. At each baptism everyone gathered makes a commitment to support the newly baptized in their life in Christ.

How do I seek baptism at St. Matthew's?

If you are interested in being baptized or having a child baptized, the Rector will meet with you, or in the case of a baby or child, with the parents and Godparents to talk about what baptism is, and how you can help your child/Godchild grow in the knowledge and love of God. They will also let you know what baptism dates are possible.
